Sr. Software Engineer
About the Role
We are looking for a Sr. Software Engineer to provide technical leadership for solutions supporting voluntary benefits products in Urbandale, Iowa. This contract position with potential for a permanent role blends hands-on engineering with architectural ownership, helping deliver secure, scalable platforms that support enrollment, eligibility, billing, premium administration, and partner connectivity. The ideal candidate brings strong software design experience, the ability to guide cross-functional delivery, and a solid understanding of building reliable systems in regulated or benefits-focused environments.
Anyone with Voluntary Benefits OR Group Policy experience is a huge plus.
Responsibilities:
• Direct the design and delivery of applications and integrations that support voluntary benefits offerings, including life, disability, dental, vision, accident, critical illness, and hospital indemnity products.
• Shape end-to-end technical approaches for capabilities such as quoting, enrollment processing, eligibility management, underwriting logic, payroll deduction workflows, premium handling, billing functions, and service operations.
• Collaborate with product leaders, analysts, subject matter experts, quality teams, and operational partners to turn business needs into maintainable technical solutions.
• Contribute directly to development activities through coding, technical reviews, troubleshooting, performance tuning, and coordination of release efforts.
• Establish and uphold engineering practices related to architecture standards, reusable patterns, secure development, and code quality.
• Lead integration planning across internal systems and external partners, including carriers, brokers, payroll providers, enrollment vendors, and third-party administrators.
• Monitor technical risks, dependencies, and design trade-offs, and present recommendations clearly to both technical and business stakeholders.
• Support production stability by assisting with incident response, root-cause investigation, and ongoing service improvements.
• Mentor engineers across the team, encourage strong technical decision-making, and help elevate overall development maturity.
• Participate in roadmap discussions, estimation, architecture reviews, and technical discovery to support future platform growth.
Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.• At least 7 years of software engineering experience, including 2 or more years leading technical direction for development teams or major initiatives.
• Demonstrated success building enterprise applications, APIs, and integrated systems within regulated, insurance, or benefits-related environments.
• Strong foundation in software architecture, distributed systems, microservices, event-driven design, and secure engineering practices.
• Experience with cloud-based platforms such as AWS, CI/CD pipelines, source control, automated testing, and application monitoring tools.
• Proficiency with technologies such as React, JavaScript, Node.js, Python, RESTful APIs, and Microsoft SQL Server.
• Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences while guiding architectural and delivery decisions.
• Familiarity with voluntary benefits, group benefits, or insurance concepts such as eligibility, premium calculation, plan configuration, payroll integrations, and carrier connectivity is preferred.
