As a Senior DBA Engineer, you will lead database modernization initiatives supporting critical healthcare applications serving patients across the United States. You will shape the strategy for modernizing SQL Server environments in AWS, including migrations to RDS, version upgrades, ETL modernization, reporting improvements, and cost optimization. You will establish scalable monitoring, backup, recovery, security, and automation practices while ensuring systems meet demanding compliance standards. You will also mentor an existing DBA team, helping strengthen cloud database capabilities and operational maturity. Working closely with DevOps, application, Finance, and technology teams, you will have significant ownership over the evolution of the database platform. Accountabilities: Lead the planning and execution of SQL Server modernization initiatives in AWS, including migrations from EC2 to Amazon RDS and/or upgrades from SQL Server 2016 to supported versions. Plan and execute compatibility assessments, upgrade testing, migration testing, and production cutovers while minimizing disruption to critical applications. Assess and modernize existing SSIS ETL packages and SSRS reporting workloads, including opportunities to migrate to AWS-native services such as AWS Glue and AWS DMS. Maintain and optimize SQL Server environments when workloads remain on EC2, ensuring reliability, performance, scalability, and supportability. Drive database cost optimization through instance right-sizing, Reserved Instance analysis, storage optimization, licensing reviews, and elimination of unnecessary infrastructure costs. Mentor and upskill the existing DBA team on AWS database operations, RDS administration, cloud architecture, monitoring, security, and best practices. Establish cloud-native monitoring, alerting, and performance baselines using Datadog, Amazon CloudWatch, and SQL Server diagnostic capabilities. Design and implement automated backup, restore, and disaster recovery processes using AWS Backup and related technologies. Perform query optimization, index management, performance tuning, capacity planning, and database health assessments. Collaborate with DevOps teams to automate database infrastructure and deployments using Terraform and infrastructure-as-code practices. Maintain strong database security and support HITRUST E1 compliance through encryption, access controls, audit logging, and appropriate data protection measures. Partner with application teams to support database-related development, troubleshooting, performance, and operational requirements. Evaluate future modernization opportunities involving PostgreSQL, Amazon Aurora, and other database technologies for longer-term platform roadmaps. Document database architectures, operational procedures, migration plans, recovery strategies, and technical standards. Maintain high standards of data integrity, availability, security, and operational resilience across database environments. Requirements: 8+ years of professional experience in database administration or a closely related discipline. Deep expertise with Microsoft SQL Server 2016+ including performance tuning, high availability, disaster recovery, and operational administration. Hands-on experience performing SQL Server version upgrades and end-of-support migrations, including compatibility-level assessment and upgrade testing. Strong practical experience with SSIS, including building, maintaining, troubleshooting, and migrating ETL packages. Strong practical experience with SSRS, including report development, administration, and modernization. Hands-on experience with AWS RDS for SQL Server, including setup, migration, monitoring, and Multi-AZ configurations. Experience with AWS database migration and ETL services such as AWS DMS and AWS Glue, or a strong understanding of how to modernize SSIS-based workloads within AWS. Demonstrated experience with database migration projects, including on-premises or EC2-to-RDS migrations and in-place SQL Server upgrades. Strong understanding of backup and restore strategies, point-in-time recovery, disaster recovery, and cross-region replication. Experience with database monitoring and diagnostics using tools such as Datadog, CloudWatch, and SQL Server DMVs. Proficiency in T-SQL, stored procedures, query optimization, indexing, and database performance analysis. Experience working in regulated environments with requirements such as HIPAA, HITRUST, and SOC 2. Experience with Terraform and infrastructure-as-code for database infrastructure is preferred. Familiarity with AWS Backup, AWS DMS, AWS Glue, and AWS-native database services is advantageous. Experience with PostgreSQL, Amazon Aurora, or other modern database engines is a plus. Familiarity with Windows Server administration is beneficial. AWS certifications such as Database Specialty or Solutions Architect are preferred. Strong mentoring and knowledge-transfer skills, with the ability to coach DBAs and application developers on cloud database best practices. Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and collaboration skills. Strong ability to manage complex modernization initiatives while balancing security, performance, cost, reliability, and business requirements. Must be authorized to work for any employer in the United States; visa sponsorship or transfer is not available for this position. Benefits: Annual salary range of $125,600–$157,000 .
